What is cheating and how do you avoid it?

By-Tay

It’s the night before the test. Your palms are sweating, your feet are shaking, and your brain is about to explode just because you are studying with the textbook. Should you put in the simple effort for another 30 minutes to study or should you watch a 5 minute crafts video on how to cheat on your test? Well, let’s do the right thing by making our parents proud by CHEATING ON THE TEST!

okay okay. Cheating isn't the best thing to do to make your parents proud just to get that new Barbie Doll at Target. You see, even though cheating on this 1 test might not do too much damage, IT CAN DO ALOT OF DAMAGE. This test may have some knowledge that you will need for college and when you go to your college graduation, they will announce that, “(insert name here) will not be graduating due to them not knowing how to spell the word ‘cat’ ”. And if you don’t know how to spell cat, I just gave it to you.

What is cheating?

According to Wikipedia, Cheating is…

*takes deep breath

Cheating generally describes various actions designed to subvert rules in order to obtain unfair advantages. This includes acts of bribery, cronyism and nepotism in any situation where individuals are given preference using inappropriate criteria.[1] The rules infringed may be explicit, or they may be from an unwritten code of conduct based on morality, ethics or custom, making the identification of cheating conduct a potentially subjective process. Cheating can refer specifically to infidelity. Someone who is known for cheating is referred to as a cheat in British English, and a cheater in American English. A person described as a "cheat" doesn't necessarily cheat all the time, but rather, relies on deceitful tactics to the point of acquiring a reputation for it.

*exhales

See? That was simple. Ok ok, let me describe it in one sentence.

Cheating is basically using a reference like a computer, paper, or even things written on your hand to help you get certain answers right on a quiz, test, exam, or assessment.

Here is an example: Let’s say that Lela was your teacher and she gave you a vocabulary quiz from her Vocabulary of the Week article. You found her article and pulled it up during the test so your mom and dad would be proud that you knew what “Obloquy” means (By the way it means If you are on the receiving end of obloquy, then society has turned against you and you are in a state of disgrace. Kinda if like you cheat then society finds out and then you would be in a state of disgrace and they turn on you).

If you're one of these people who like to cheat, it is mostly so you can impress someone or seem smart. And that’s okay. We live in a very tense social world of popularity and drama. (Obloquy)

Why and how you stop cheating

Here are some tips and ideas on how to stop cheating on a test from professional contributors on wikiHow.

  1. If you cheated and you do pass, it won’t be because of your hard work.

    1. If you cheated and passed, it won’t be because of your hard work. It will be because of a slip of paper that doesn’t have a brain.

    2. If someone finds out you cheated, that would be embarrassing. How to avoid it? Make sure no one finds out. No. DON’T CHEAT AT ALL. Don’t want to be on the receiving end of the Obloquy.

    3. Make people like your parents proud because of your hard work. Not because of the slip of paper.

  2. Relying on cheating.

    1. You have done nothing but cheat to get that grade.

    2. You might cheat on your next test.

    3. This can lead to a lack of the habit to study and to put in the effort to do so.

  3. Reviewing notes and learning from mistakes.

    1. Making a mistake doesn’t mean you have to cheat.

    2. Reviewing notes can help you be prepared for an exam.

      1. How? Make flashcards so you memorize them while writing them down and reviewing them.

    3. Study often even if no quiz is coming up just in case.

      1. Why? This can prepare you early on and prepare you for a surprise pop quiz.

  4. If you do bad on a test, this will teach you to be prepared for upcoming tests.

    1. This will teach you a lesson like never walk across the highway during rush hour. Well you would be 💀by then.

  5. Know that if you get bad results, you’ll study next time. (This one is if you did study but got a bad result.)

    1. Go to a teacher and ask them if they can help you in certain areas of improvement.

      1. Don’t have the courage? They already know about your grade.

  6. Remind yourself that it is okay to get bad grades.

    1. Tests are tests but finals are never final because they never prepare us for the real test, which is survival. (Copied and pasted from wikiHow because it is very truthful)

  7. If you are caught cheating, you will get a zero.

    1. Same rule as before. JUST DON’T CHEAT AT ALL OR YOU WILL SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES.

      1. Why? If you are caught cheating, you will get a zero. A zero is way lower than failing the test.

  8. Remember you may get a bad grade by cheating

    1. The person you are copying off of may have the wrong answers.
