What is a Reality TV Show?

By-Tay

Reality TV shows are a common genre of television, gaining popularity in the 2010s. Reality TV is a genre where the characters in the show act and encounter events that are kinda like real life situations. They often star unknown individuals, rather than professional actors, to make it seem more realistic with the general population. Reality shows often come in two forms, self-contained or arched.

  • Self-contained- Self contained reality shows are shows with episodes that are self-supported, or can support itself with the ability to be watched out of order since the storyline isn’t connected. The storyline isn’t connected since these shows are self-supported. These are shows like house shows, where one house show does not influence the next.

  • Arched- These shows generally have a storyline, where one event influences the next. These shows are most likely Nickelodeon and Disney Channel shows. These companies do this so that the shows go on and on, making viewers want to see what happens next episode.

    • Some shows that do this are-

      • Keeping Up with the Kardashians

Companies like Nickelodeon and Disney Channel are the biggest reality television show producers, with the arched list above from these companies. Reality TV viewers are normally pre-teens to teens. This is because the shows normally have events and similarities to the lives of pre-teens and teens, with some age related jokes.

FUN FACT- MOST REALITY SHOWS HAVE A LAUGH TRACK IN THE BACK TO INFLUENCE COMEDY.

HAHAHA

Reality TV has had an influence on my life, bringing comedy into my living room during this horrible pandemic. If you are within this age range and if your parents think it is appropriate, try to watch some of these shows. It is fun!
