San Fernando Rey de España Mission

By-Tay

San Fernando Rey de Espana Mission is located in San Fernando, Southern California. The mission was founded on September 8, 1797. The person who founded the mission was Fr. Fermin de Lasuen. The San Fernando Rey de Espana Mission was the 17th mission established. Animals at this mission included cattle and sheep. Crops grown at this mission were bushels of wheat, barley, corn, beans, peas, garbanzos, and habas. They also grew grape vines and fruit trees.

The Indians who lived at the mission were treated poorly and like children. They were forced to change their way of life and could not leave. A typical day at the mission would start off like this. They woke up, went to church, and ate breakfast of atole. Then they went to work with the crops and animals. They also did the cooking and cleaning in addition to making soap and candles. Lastly, they ate dinner, prayed, and went to bed.

Father Junipero Serra was a priest and a missionary who founded the first 9 missions. He was born on November 24, 1713, on the Spanish Island of Majorca. He was the individual who started the California missions. Father Junipero Serra died at the age of 70.
