All About Melanie Fiona

All About Melanie Fiona - By Felicia

Have you ever heard of Melanie Fiona? Melanie Fiona was born on July 4, 1983 in Toronto, Ontario. She is currently 37 years old. Her parents were Guyanese, and they immigrated to Canada in the 1970s. Her father was a janitor and her mother worked in banking. Her household was a very musical one, and she grew up exposed to a lot of music. At the age of 16, she started writing songs, and in 2002, she officially began her singing career.

When she began her career, she actually started as part of a girl group called X-quisite alongside Nicole Holness and Nirvana Savoury. But eventually, in 2005, the group disbanded and Melanie Fiona travelled to Los Angeles in search of a recording contract. Apparently, record labels loved the way she sang but she, in her own words, "knew that the minute I worked with them or would have signed with them, they would have tried to change me into someone else completely different. That was something that I didn't want to do." But after a while, she found one. And in June 2009, she published her debut album: The Bridge. It sold a whopping 248,000 copies in the United States alone. And just like that, two years later, in August 2011, she published her second album: The MF Life. And five years later, in 2016, she published her third album: Awake. And she has some really inspiring things to say about it. "I want to make people feel good and I want people to feel that they are not alone, that this album and me as an artist represent a voice for people to feel like 'Yeah, that is the life we’re living and we’re living it together so let’s do our part to move forward positively, and do some really great things while we are alive here". Her singing got her a lot of fans, who described her voice as “dramatic soprano, soulful and sassy, very passionate, but clean and controlled, and not over-the-top”. But she also got some haters as well: they say that her lyrics are too sappy and too sweet. She doesn’t let that bother her, though, because she’s happy as she is.

Recently, Melanie Fiona and another singer/songwriter, Jared Cotter had a son born in March 2017. They then got engaged on February 14, 2018. They tried many times to have a wedding, but COVID-19 cancelled their plans. Eventually, they got married and had a private wedding in December 2020. This is where she is now, and thank you for reading this essay!
